Our History

GAIN was founded in 2005 as the Atlanta Bar Asylum Project, a loose affiliation among the leadership of the Atlanta Bar Association, Catholic Charities, and a handful of associates from several top Atlanta law firms who recognized that:

- unrepresented immigrants in the Atlanta area could benefit from pro bono representation;

- introducing pro bono attorneys into the U.S. Immigration Court system in Atlanta would assist the Court by facilitating the reasonable and efficient adjudication of unrepresented immigrants’ cases; and

- a formal organization providing mentorship and guidance in immigration law would ensure that lawyers who venture into the U.S. Immigration Court system are adequately prepared and able to provide a satisfactory level of representation.

Since then, the organization has become a formal pro bono opportunity referral organization. In addition to placing asylum cases with volunteer attorneys, it has expanded its services to represent immigrants who have been victimized upon their arrival in the United States.

Testimonial

"GAIN has given me the opportunity to have the type of meaningful impact on a client's life that first inspired me to go to law school." -Martha Henley, King & Spalding

"The work I have done through GAIN is among the most personally rewarding work I've done in my career. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know people I would not otherwise know and to help people who otherwise would not be helped."
-Joshua Becker, Alston & Bird.

"I appreciate GAIN for all they have done to help people like me who have had violence in their life. GAIN helped me escape my violent past and did the best job to help people who do not have income to find a lawyer. I would not be where I am today without GAIN. They have helped me a lot and I am so excited to start my new life." -Former Client and Survivor of Domestic Violence
